Interview with Q5 | «While the most recent lineup of the Q5 dissolved, Q5 music did not»

Hello Jonathan, thank you for this interview we are really happy for this as Greeks are big fans of Q5. Please tell us some news about the Q5. Where are you now? I read that the band. Has been dissolved and you are about to make a new beginning. Why was that?

Jonathan Scott K: Hi Chris and Elena. Thank you for the opportunity to talk with people about Q5. It’s especially appropriate in my mind to speak to our fans in Greece who I love because of their passion for music and Q5. While the most recent lineup of the Q5 dissolved, Q5 music did not, and I did not decide to shut the doors on the past or the future. I formed the band with my friend Floyd Rose back in the 80’s and the decision to completely stop writing or performing the songs to anyone that wants to hear them is with me. Q5 as a band is reforming. I am in the process of writing new songs. Some with my old friend Floyd Rose, and some with others and I will hopefully have a record label interested in them next year.

What about the line up?

Jonathan Scott K: I Have been approached by a number of musicians who want to perform in Q5 and I will have some of them play the new songs in the studio. I will make a decision who will perform live after the new year.

Could you please tell us about the decision to get the band together again?

Jonathan Scott K: I was informed that the recent lineup of the band wanted to move on all on the same day. The former members all had different reasons for wanting to move on. My longtime friend Evan Sheeley simply wanted to retire from music. The rest had other things they wanted to do. There were no moments when I thought about stopping. Music has been a great part of my life since I was a very small boy. The only question is. Do people still want to hear Q5 music? I believe so and we will find out.

I think that the band was about to release a new album. Is that true? Should we wait for a new album soon?

Jonathan Scott K: I’m writing new material. It will be up to the record company if they want to release it. I will present some small parts of new songs very soon and I look forward to hearing what people think. People can always get in touch with me on social media on my FaceBook page, Q5-Steel and Light.

How do you feel about the fact that despite the band was away for many years your fans are still there admire and support you?

Jonathan Scott K: It’s all about the music, isn’t it? I am proud of all the songs I’ve written. Steel The Light is considered a classic song in many parts of the world. I am proud to have been a part of the band that wrote it and all the other songs on our albums. I have many many favorite songs that I wrote. Not just Steel The Light and I am always moved by people who know Q5 through it’s music who join us by singing the songs as we perform them and I am honored to be able to present and perform these songs as the original singer of Q5.

80s was a great period to play heavy metal music. Has the heavy metal nowadays the same resonance?

Jonathan Scott K:  The 80’s was a particular time in music history wasn’t it? The 60’s and 70’s laid a groundwork of superb players and music styles and in the 80’s it coalesced into these incredible bands and styles that we all love. I’m not particularly a fan of 90’s style but to each his own. Today there are a number of newer hard Rock-Heavy Metal bands that I enjoy listening to Sabaton, Kamalot, Greta Van Fleet, and others, but don’t write off the earlier bands from the that are still playing and writing. The challenge now is to get the music out to people who want to listen and the world is much smaller now with YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, all the streaming services. Here in America the only new music they play is pop music. Nothing wrong with that but there is very little Rock or Metal played here anymore. We all have to travel elsewhere.

Do you intend to maintain the same music style now or you would like to try something new?

Jonathan Scott K: Q5 was always about the music. I will always stay true to the Q5 roots.

What to expect from the band from now on?
Jonathan Scott K: We will re-group and write new music. We will perform for anyone that wants to hear the music live. You can keep in touch on our FaceBook page Q5-Steel and Light or Instagram @ metalkingQ5. I can also be personally contacted by email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

What about your influences?
Jonathan Scott K: I was heavily influenced musically by my parents. My father was an opera singer and my grandmother played concert piano. My Rock influences were people like Bon Scott, Ronnie James Dio, Roger Daltrey and Freddie Mercury to name a few. Bands Like Uriah Heep, The Who, Cream, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, and many many more.

In New World Order album there is a song named ‘’ One night in Hellas ‘’. Tell us about that song. What was that which made you wrote that song after your live performance in Greece?

Our first trip to Greece was in 2014. We played in Athens and and in Cyprus. The people who came to our shows were wonderful and it was the first of the great shows we have done in Greece. I personally found Greece, the country to be so beautiful and full of wonderful things to see and experience. I fell in Love with it instantly. I wrote the lyrics and melody of the song One Night in Hellas as a tribute to the people of Greece who are so fortunate to live surrounded by the great culture and history of this fabulous land. I stood at near dark on the lip of the rock at Acropoli and imagined myself and the thousands of ghosts from the past. Our guitar player Rick Pierce had a lovely bit of music that seemed to be perfect for the lyric and it was! I hope everyone gets to hear this song. It is one of my favorites.

Q5 was a band that made a stand in the 80’s. People loved you and they still do. If you could turn back time, would you change your decisions about the band?

Jonathan Scott K: I appreciate more than I can say the fans of our band. I do believe it is the music, the songs. Our music touches many people in different ways as all music does. i am proud to be a part of people memories around the world. I could travel back in time I would change many things. Who wouldn’t? But we are here now and the music still sings to us. What is better than that?

Any Plans to see you in Greece again?

Jonathan Scott K: I will come to Greece again. Hopefully as a performer with Q5. If that is not possible, personally I will still come to Greece because I have come to love Greece very much and I have a number of great friends there that I always enjoy seeing and spending time with. and there are still many places there I need to see. But I do hope to see you all as Q5 again very soon.

For all of the fans of Q5 in Greece: I love you all very much. Thank you for supporting Q5 and it’s music over the years. It means more than you know and I speak for the whole band when I say that you have our admiration and appreciation for joining us in concert. I hope to return soon with new music and the old of course, and i very much look forward to seeing and speaking with you all again.

Efcharisto Poly! Jonathan K.
